Local installers then quote against that same brief, which means you're comparing like with like on price, timing and service rather than working out what each quote does and doesn't include.

There's no cost to use FenceBuddy and no obligation to accept any quote you receive. We also hold detailed information on every installer in our network, so beyond just gathering quotes, we can help you weigh up which installer is genuinely the right fit for your job.

FenceBuddy is run by Our Town Fencing, the manufacturer: installers get fully specified local jobs, we supply the materials, you get like-for-like quotes. That is the whole model.

FenceBuddy is launching in NSW first, with QLD and VIC to follow. If you're outside NSW in the meantime, you can still visit one of our showrooms for a supply or supply-and-install quote. We'll let you know as soon as FenceBuddy reaches your state.

FenceBuddy includes the full Our Town Fencing range: Fenscreen boundary fencing, blade fencing, garden fencing (including picket styles), pool fencing, slat fencing (pre-built panels or DIY Loov-A-Slat® kits), security fencing and gates, including automated options.

What's the difference between boundary, blade and slat fencing?

Boundary fencing (our Fenscreen range) is a flat-sheet steel panel system built for full-length privacy. Fenscreen Classic is Colorbond® steel, available in 29 colours. Fenscreen Plus comes in four standard finishes. Fenscreen Unique offers two timber-look options.

Blade fencing uses aluminium blades for a more architectural, semi-open look. It comes in three ranges: Deco at 900mm and 1200mm, OzSafe with slimmer blades for more visibility and Econo at 900mm.

Slat fencing sits in between, horizontal slats either prebuilt or built on site, popular for feature sections or extending an existing fence.

What heights can I choose for a boundary fence?

Standard boundary fence panel heights are 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.1m, allowing you to meet council requirements or choose the level of privacy that suits your property.

You can also customise your fence by adding a colour-matched aluminium sleeper or treated pine sleeper beneath the fence to increase overall height, help retain garden beds or accommodate sloping ground. For additional privacy or a decorative finish, you can also add a lattice or Slattice® fence topper.

Can I mix fencing styles across one property?

Yes. In fact, it's one of the most popular approaches. Many homeowners install Fenscreen boundary fencing along the sides and rear for privacy, then choose a feature fence such as blade, slat or picket fencing across the front to complement their home's style.

FenceBuddy allows you to assign different fencing styles to different sections of your property, so you can design a fence that's both practical and visually appealing.

How does FenceBuddy account for coastal, bushfire and high-wind conditions?

Tell us your address and we account for location factors such as coastal corrosion exposure or bushfire (BAL) requirements. Your installer will then factor them in when recommending materials and preparing your quote.

Where can I see the fencing before I decide?

Our fencing styles are on display at our showrooms across NSW, QLD and VIC, open six days a week, so you can see the products up close before making your decision.

Where suitable, we can also create an AI-generated visualisation of your chosen fencing style on your property, giving you a clearer idea of how the finished project will look before you commit.

Do I need council approval for my fence?

Standard boundary fences at standard heights usually don't need approval. The exceptions worth checking: front boundary fences, corner blocks, anything above standard height, pool barriers, heritage or special-character areas.

Your council's website answers most of it in minutes and installers working in your area know the local rules well.

How does FenceBuddy make pool fence compliance simpler?

Pool fencing is the one job where the rules really matter, so FenceBuddy treats it differently. Tell us it's a pool fence and every quote comes back built from pool-compliant products, with matching gates plus compliant self-closing hinges and latches included from the start rather than added on later.

The requirements themselves are set by the relevant Australian Standard for swimming pool safety barriers, along with your state and local council. Queensland has its own variations. Your local authority may also require a barrier inspection or certificate before the pool can be legally used.

Your installer can advise what applies in your area, and we provide the product compliance documentation that supports the process, so you're not left working the rules out on your own.

What compliance documentation does Our Town Fencing provide?

Compliance certification isn't typically included in your FenceBuddy quote. Your fencing installer can advise whether they offer certification services or help arrange the appropriate inspections, as requirements vary between states and local councils.

Our Town Fencing can provide the product compliance documentation required to support the certification process. This includes a Form 15 for eligible projects in Queensland, or proof of testing and product compliance documentation for projects in NSW and Victoria, where applicable. Your installer or certifier can advise which documentation is required for your project.

What pool fencing styles are available?

Our Town Fencing offers a range of pool-compliant fencing solutions to suit different styles and budgets.

Our core range includes Deco 4 Fin tubular aluminium pool fencing, engineered to be 45% stronger than standard tubular pool fencing, plus OzSafe, our slimline tubular pool fencing system, with thinner uprights for greater visibility through the barrier.

For a more contemporary look, we also offer pool-compliant blade fencing in selected configurations. Matching gates and compliant self-closing hinges and latches are also available to complete your pool fence.

Can my boundary fence form part of the pool barrier?

Commonly, yes. Where a boundary fence encloses part of a pool area, that fence must meet pool barrier requirements: minimum heights, no climbable elements nearby, strict limits on gaps.

If your new fence borders a pool, tell us in your site notes so the specification is built to barrier standard from the start rather than corrected at inspection.

How are boundary fence costs shared with a neighbour?

In NSW, QLD and VIC, dividing fences legislation generally provides that neighbouring owners share the cost of a sufficient dividing fence. Exactly what counts as “sufficient”, plus the process for recovering costs, varies between states.

FenceBuddy can generate a quote you’re welcome to share with your neighbour as a starting point for that conversation.

Which fence looks good from both sides?

Ask for the Mirrascreen profile within our Fenscreen range, available across Classic, Plus and Unique. Both sides still show the rails and posts, but the panel is mirrored so the look is identical either way: both neighbours enjoy the same clean appearance rather than one side showing rails while the other doesn't.

That symmetry tends to make it an easier sell when you're asking a neighbour to go halves on a shared fence.

How does it work if you and your neighbour want different fences?

You're generally free to build a better fence than the shared standard, but you'll usually cover the difference in cost yourself. Your local council or a legal adviser can confirm the specific rules where you live.

Mainly the length and height of fencing, the style and material you choose, gate requirements, plus how easy the site is to access.

FenceBuddy captures all of this upfront, so your quotes reflect the actual job rather than a rough guess. One thing FenceBuddy can't see is what's underground: rock, tree roots or old footings sometimes only show up once digging starts. If that happens, your installer may need to adjust the price to reflect what they actually find on site.

This helps ensure any price adjustment is limited to genuine unforeseen site conditions.

FenceBuddy matches you with installers already working in your region, so they know local conditions like soil type, council requirements and typical block layouts. It's also usually why turnaround is quicker than starting a search from scratch.

How does FenceBuddy help you choose the right installer?

You review each quote and choose the fencing installer you're most comfortable with. Nobody is assigned to your job without your say-so.

Who is responsible for what during your installation?

Accepted Answer

It's a fair thing to want clarity on before you commit. Your installation agreement is directly with your chosen installer, who is responsible for scheduling, workmanship and completing the installation.

If you have concerns about delays or workmanship, your installer should be your first point of contact. If you're unable to resolve the issue, Our Town Fencing will do our best to assist by helping facilitate communication. As the installation agreement is between you and the installer, we are unable to accept responsibility for the installation work or any disputes arising from those services.

We remain responsible for the quality of the fencing materials we manufacture and supply, with eligible products covered by our product warranties.

Question 30

How and when do I pay?

Payment for installation goes to your chosen installer, following the payment schedule set out in their quote. A deposit with progress or completion payments is typical, the exact terms are in the quote you accept.

Two habits protect you on any building job. Never pay ahead of the agreed schedule. Hold the final payment until the work is complete as quoted. If anything about a payment request feels off, call our team before paying.

Can I buy the materials and install the fence myself?

Yes. FenceBuddy isn't only for supply-and-install jobs. Ask for supply only, collect from your nearest showroom or arrange delivery, then install it yourself.

When is a full install the better choice?

DIY works well for straightforward, flat, regular-shaped sections. For pool fencing where compliance really matters, sloping blocks or boundaries with awkward angles and corners, it's worth the full FenceBuddy option: we handle the measuring and specification, an experienced installer handles the install.

Those are exactly the jobs where a bit of experience saves you the most time and cost.

How long does a fence take from quote to completion?

Many standard fencing products are available from stock for immediate collection or fast delivery, so supply-only orders can move quickly.

For a full install through FenceBuddy, timing depends on your chosen installer's schedule and whether anything is custom-made. Your quote will include an estimated start date.

Let our team know your target date and we'll only pass the job to installers who can realistically meet it, rather than leaving you to chase each one yourself.

What should I expect on installation day?

Some noise, a crew on site and your yard open for part of the day. Help it run smoothly by clearing the fence line beforehand, planning where pets will be and confirming access for the crew and their gear.

Weather can shift dates, your installer will keep you posted and confirm how long they expect to be on site.

My fence is damaged. Can Our Town Fencing help right away?

A damaged fence isn't something you want to sit with for long. Select the Repair option in FenceBuddy and provide as much detail as possible about the damage, including photos if you have them.

We'll refer your enquiry to a suitable local fencing installer, who will contact you to discuss the repair and arrange a site inspection if required. Availability and response times will vary depending on the installer and demand in your area.

Question 38

How do I decide between a repair and a full replacement?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the age and condition of the rest of the fence. A newer steel fence with isolated damage usually just needs a like-for-like panel repair.

If the fence is older or the damage is widespread, your fencing installer will typically offer a full replacement quote alongside a repair-only option so you can compare.

What happens when the job is finished?

Once the job's done, your installer will confirm the work has been completed in accordance with your accepted quote. If anything looks off, start with your installer's own workmanship warranty. Our team is here to help if you need to escalate it further.

How does the We Care Warranty protect me?

Accepted Answer

Eligible Our Town Fencing products are covered under our We Care Warranty. Fenscreen Classic carries up to 10 years, while Fenscreen Plus and Fenscreen Unique carry 15 years. Full terms are at ourtownfencing.com.au/pages/wecare. Workmanship is covered separately by your installer’s own warranty, outlined in your quote.

Will insurance cover my fence damage?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Damage from a storm, a fallen tree or another sudden event is usually claimable. Wear, age or deferred maintenance generally isn't covered.

If you're claiming, tell us when you submit the job: the quotes and documentation FenceBuddy produces give your insurer exactly what they need. Your installer can time the work around your claim's approval.

Question 43

My old fence might be asbestos cement. What happens?

Accepted Answer

Grey corrugated cement-sheet fencing is common on older Australian properties and may contain asbestos. Removal is licensed work, priced separately by licensed removalists rather than your fencing installer.

If your old fence looks like this, mention it in your site notes and include a photo. Your quote will exclude suspected asbestos-cement removal and we'll point you to the right people, so there are no surprises mid-job.
